The route is in blue:
Weymouth to Chickerell
This ride is on quiet roads and newly constructed cycle paths. It serves the residential areas of north west Weymouth and Chickerell as well as the holiday parks on the Fleet. It is not very hilly.
It is suitable for all types of rider including children. It is also suitable for most types of bike. This route is mainly unsigned and the following are pointers to be read with the map. Leave the Swannery Car Park by passing under the road bridge then follow the cycle path along the edge of Radipole Lake.
Radipole Lake in Spring |
Turn right onto Westham Bridge, now a car park, and right at the end of the bridge. Here we have included on the map two alternative routes. The eastern route on the west side of Radipole lake is unmade and rather narrow but gives views of the lake with its abundant bird life. Unfortunately it also requires you to navigate the busy and dangerous Chafeys Roundabout on the inadequate cycle and pedestrian crossings.
Otherwise go through the underpass and immediately turn left onto Corscombe Close. Turn right at the end of the path and join Abbotsbury Road. Alternatively you can gain the right hand pavement on Abbotsbury Road by continuing straight on after the underpass. This is the safer option but slower.
At Chafeys Roundabout you join the recently built cycle route which after the first 500 metres is separated from the road by a grass verge. The circular track towards the end of the route not only gives access but also some very pleasant views of the Fleet and Lyme Bay.
