Weymouth to Upwey and the Wishing Well
The route to the Wishing Well at Upwey to the north of Weymouth serves the large population centre of Upwey and Broadwey. It passes four schools and Upwey train station. It is a pleasant ride mainly on quiet residential roads and paths. It is not very hilly.
It is suitable for all types of rider including children. It is also suitable for most types of bike. Those on trikes, trailers and heavily laden tandems may need to take a short diversion but otherwise should also be able to enjoy this route. There are two short stretches on the busy Dorchester Road. For children or the less experienced it is of course illegal to ride on the wide pavement but a lot safer.
The River Wey near to Water Lane |
You start from the Swannery car park going north on the cycle track on the wide pavement beside Radipole Park Drive.
After some further quiet residential roads you cross Dorchester Road at a light controlled crossing. Here you reach a footpath off Dorchester Road. If your bike will not fit continue on Dorchester Road and turn right into Lorton Lane to rejoin the route. This avoids two narrow paths where cyclists should walk.
Soon after this you will come to the entrance to Upwey Station with trains to London and Bristol and of course Weymouth. All trains carry bikes free without booking. Space is usually available and even if it is not put your bike on anyway.
At Upwey you will find the Wishing Well café which is often frequented by local cyclists. It has a pleasant garden and the famous wishing well near to the source of the River Wey. If you have time it is worth exploring the Wey valley with its fast running stream and abundance of wild life.
