Weymouth to Preston Beach and Sealife

The route to Preston and Bowleaze Cove to the east of Weymouth is a pleasant ride on quiet roads and paths. It gives access to the pebble beach beside Preston Beach Road and to Bowleaze Cove. It is also not very hilly.

It is suitable for all types of rider including children. It is also suitable for most types of bike though there are some unmade sections which would be uncomfortable on a lightweight road bike.

Sealife is on the way to Preston Beach

Start from the Swannery car park and go north on the cycle track on the wide pavement beside Radipole Park Drive. You soon turn right to cross the railway via the excellent Alexander cycle bridge.

You soon cross the busy Dorchester Road and you can use the pelican crossing near Tesco if you find this road intimidating. After another short stretch on minor roads, passing Weymouth College, you travel on a cycle track through Lodmoor Country Park.

At this point you are very near the Sea Life Park visitor attraction and also some fun fair type rides and a miniature railway.

When you reach Preston Beach Road you will find a cycle path on its north side. The local authority has also resolved to remove the cycle restrictions on the promenade between here and Overcombe Corner. As usual this is taking ages to put into effect and the “no cycling signs” are still in place. In nice weather it is a pleasant ride here along the often deserted sea wall.

At Overcombe Corner there is the excellent Oasis beach café and a couple of shops. It is also possible to reach Bowleaze Cove but if you want to take your bike the road is very steep.
